FYE Brochure 2024-2025

Students who have earned less than thirty (30) hours of college credit after graduating high school are required to live on campus as First Year students. Because of the educational benefits and campus connections created by living on campus, first-year students at UNC Chapel Hill are required to live in on-campus residence halls or at Granville Towers during the entirety of their first academic year.  For full First Year Live On Requirement details and exceptions, go tot the First Year FAQ for more details.

With that, the department has created a program designed to excite and enrich first-year students. Our goal for the First Year Experience is to provide you with an academically and socially supportive environment. While living on campus, you will make new friends, immerse yourself in the UNC culture, establish valuable academic connections and identify unique leadership opportunities. Our residence halls are staffed with dedicated professional and student staff members that are here to support you as you transition to Carolina. You can learn more about the First-Year Experience below.

As an FYE participant, you will have access to the program’s resources when you need them. From academic to educational programs to cultural and recreational events, we encourage you to participate and take advantage of the opportunities of living in a learning-centered environment. This year, you can expect many fun and engaging activities, starting with the Week of Welcome events to a myriad of other happenings throughout the academic year.

Our goal for the First Year Experience is to provide you with an academically and socially supportive environment. While living on campus, you will make new friends, immerse yourself in the UNC culture, establish valuable academic connections and identify unique leadership opportunities. FYE provides students with resources and support during their transition at Carolina and as residents of Carolina Housing.

Through the work of our staff , our in-hall staff, including our amazing Resident Advisors, help deliver these various strategies. Types of strategies that you can expect include roommate/suitemate agreements, active building and floor programs, intentional facilitated interactions between resident and RA, educationally passive content, and much more.

Some unique and specific in their delivery based on the floor or RA while others may be identical in their delivery to provide a similar opportunity regardless of the floor or hall that you live in. Some strategies are required, like roommate agreements, whereas others like active programs remain our residents’ choice in how frequently they participate. These strategies are also built and sequenced in nature to build as each student chooses to participate.

The goal being that with each strategy increases the engage, learning, and growth that can come through participation. It is also the model with which our DiscoverMore programming curriculum is developed on and one of the great benefits of sophomores, juniors, and seniors choosing to return to live on-campus beyond their First Year Experience. At its core, our FYE program is constructed to begin creating your sense of belonging here at Carolina and find ways to build your home within our residence halls.
