By: Becca Gillison, with Matt Bertram

Hello Tar Heel families and students! My name is Becca Gillison, and I’m thrilled to welcome you to Carolina Housing. As the Assistant Director for Student Staff Recruitment and Selection, my job is to help students get involved and find rewarding roles within our Carolina Housing community.

Why Consider a Student Staff Position with Carolina Housing?

Becoming a student staff member is an incredible opportunity to make connections, gain valuable work experience, and earn some extra money while living on campus. Whether you’re a parent or a new student, it’s important to know about the diverse range of positions we offer, tailored to fit different schedules, interests, and skill sets.

The Resident Advisor (RA) Role

One of the most well-known positions is the Resident Advisor (RA). Many parents might recall being RAs themselves back in college. It’s a fantastic way for students to develop leadership skills and build a supportive community. RA applications typically open in November for the following year, so it’s essential to keep an eye on our website for details on dates, job descriptions, and expectations.

Office Assistant (OA) Positions

Another flexible option is the Office Assistant (OA) role. This position allows students to work around their class schedules, as it involves shift work at the front desk. We currently have an alternate OA application open this summer, making it a perfect time for incoming students to apply. This way, they can be considered if positions open up throughout the summer or fall semester.

Learn More and Get Involved

We encourage students to learn more about these roles by talking to current student staff members. During orientation or move-in weekend, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to ask them questions about their experiences. Additionally, our website offers a wealth of resources, including a very handy “Student Staff Information Hub” that provides details on every student employment role with Carolina Housing.

Listen to our Podcast!

For a deeper dive into what it’s like to be part of Carolina Housing, don’t miss our podcast called Campus Connection: A Carolina Housing Podcast!  It’s available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and most other music and radio apps. On Episode 15, I shared insights about our hiring practices and tips on how to prepare for these roles. Remember, no prior experience is necessary for most positions, making them an excellent way for students to gain their first job experience on campus.

Upcoming Changes and New Opportunities

We’re excited to announce that all our job applications will soon transition to a new platform called eRezLife. This change will make it easier for students to find and apply for positions in one convenient location. Stay tuned for updates and make sure to check out our website once it’s live.

Final Tips

When applying, it’s crucial for students to read through job descriptions and understand the expectations and dates involved. This ensures they choose a position that fits well with their academic and personal commitments. For instance, each position has different hour requirements and mandatory training dates that may overlap with summer internships. Check out the employment dates to make sure they align with your student’s academic pursuits.
