New Years Resolutions to Make This Year Amazing!

January 10, 2024 |

By Sophia Raspanti

Have you made a new year’s resolution? With the beginning of the 2024 spring semester right around the corner, now is a great time to reflect on the previous year and set new goals for the upcoming year.

In creating your own new year’s goals and resolutions, begin by reflecting on the previous year.

What did you feel you did well?

Are there areas you feel you could improve upon?

Keep these reflections in mind as you work on setting goals for the upcoming academic year. Remember, the best resolutions are the ones you can reasonably keep as the year progresses: start small… the little things add up over time!

  • Consider Learning a New Skill

Have you been wondering how to use a 3-D printer? Interested in expanding your sewing skills? Consider learning a new skill this semester at the BeAM MakerSpace. To get started, you’ll need to complete an orientation module and in-person certification. Next, feel free to choose from a variety of different lessons to learn your desired skill. The staff at BeAM is incredibly friendly and encouraging, so don’t feel intimidated by the complicated-looking machinery: we’re here to help!

  • Exercise your creativity at the Morrison Art Studio!

Looking for a fun way to relax and create something awesome in the process? Consider swinging by the Morrison Art Studio, a space filled with creative supplies including paints, canvases, and more! An artist-in-residence who is a graduate student working toward their Master of Fine Arts degree serves as a resource if you’re looking to build your artistry skills!

  • Create a stress-management plan before the semester gets busy!

Difficult and demanding courses often means that college is a stressful time for students, but there are many resources available to help. Before the semester gets busy, consider creating a personalized plan to mitigate potential stressors as the year progresses. Consider checking out Campus Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), which offers a variety of programs and resources about stress management for undergraduate students. Additionally, Hinton James students are welcome to make an appointment with the Well Being coaches, two graduate students working towards their Masters in Social Work, who work with students to create action plans to overcome personal hurdles and challenges. Additionally, the Learning Center is a great place to learn new study tactics, build healthy study habits, and receive help in difficult courses through peer tutoring, academic coaching, and more!

  • Make an appointment with your academic advisor early!

Thinking about adding or dropping a course? Want to change your major? Wondering if you’re on track to graduate on time? Make an appointment with an academic advisor before the semester is underway with UNC Advising at the Steele building or at the Hardin Advisory Hub.

  • Get on top of job and internship applications with the University Career Services!

Thinking of applying for a summer internship? Ready to start your career? University Career Services is here to help! Make an appointment through Handshake to get started.

If you’re a STEM student considering doing research, visit the Office of Undergraduate Research to get started. This department offers a multitude of resources for students, including programs throughout the year designed to elevate your experience in research.

Additionally, if you’re looking for an exciting, fun, and rewarding internship in marketing, consider applying to the Carolina Housing Marketing Summer Internship!
