Get Ready for Life on Campus with Carolina Housing

It’s never too early to start preparing for your journey as a first-year Tar Heel. Carolina Housing is here to support you every step of the way, with a wide range of resources designed to ensure you’re informed, confident, and ready to settle into your new home.

To make things even easier, we’ve compiled all of our key materials and helpful links into one centralized hub: the Resident Resource Webpage. Bookmark it, review it often, and explore everything it has to offer. It’s your go-to destination for getting fully prepared to arrive on campus and thrive in your new community.

Our Summer Education Series features expert-led sessions from Carolina Housing staff, providing 101-style overviews on essential topics such as room assignments, package centers, residential life, tech setup, and student employment opportunities.

As you get closer to arrival, our comprehensive Fall Move-In Guide will walk you through everything you need to know—from move-in procedures to what to pack (and what to leave behind).

If you still have questions, we’re always happy to help. Reach out by email, give us a call, or stop by our office. Whether you’re joining us for the first time or returning for another year, welcome to Carolina Housing.

Carmichael Makerspace

BeAM@Carolina is a network of makerspaces where any UNC student, staff, or faculty member can join the UNC maker community in the design and creation of physical objects for education, research, entrepreneurship, and recreation. Makers can participate in studio work, training sessions, workshops, and class maker projects through a number of courses taught across campus. BeAM patrons can collaborate and build valuable skills in spaces equipped with emerging technologies such as 3D printing and laser cutting, along with areas dedicated to sewing and woodworking. Including our partnership with the Kenan Science Library (located in Venable Hall), makers have four locations from which to choose to fit their schedules and making interests: Murray Hall, Hanes Art Center, and Carmichael Residence Hall.

Carolina Housing has partnered with BeAM to provide a Makerspace in Carmichael residence hall to make it easy and convenient for residents on campus to start making and creating! It also provides a unique space to engage with each other and for staff to put on fun programs and events.

Training and Maker Resources

  • Three steps must be completed for anyone wanting to access the BeAM Makerspace network. To do this, first sign the waiver form, then complete BeAM 101 online training, and finally sign up for the in-person training session. Visit our website for more in-person trainings.
  • Once this process is complete, you can go through the list of additional training options on the BeAM website and learn how to use specific tools and machines. This includes 3D printers, laser cutters, sewing machines, and much more!

Upcoming Changes

·        BeAM will soon be switching our online training from Sakai to Canvas! Visit our website for more information.

·        Starting April 2023, BeAM is launching two new desktop embroidery machine stations at Carmichael Hall and Murray Hall. You will be able to access trainings for these machines in Canvas.
