Understanding the Role of Service Desks at Carolina Housing

By: Rilee Knott & Matt Bertram

Welcome to Carolina! My name is Rilee, and today, I’ll be discussing an essential aspect of campus life: service desks. Service desks are integral to the Carolina community, and you’ll likely interact with them frequently throughout your time here. This guide will provide you with valuable information to help you understand and utilize these resources effectively.

What is a Service Desk?

A service desk is a central hub of activity and support within each residential community. While each service desk is unique, their core purpose remains the same: to assist students and provide necessary resources. It’s important to note that not every building will have its own service desk. Instead, there is typically one active service desk per community, which may be located in a neighboring building if not in your own.

Who Works at Service Desks?

When you visit a service desk, you’ll be greeted by student staff members known as Office Assistants (OAs). These OAs work for Carolina Housing and are a great resource for information and support. They are well-trained to help with a variety of needs and are a friendly face to turn to when you need assistance.

Interested in becoming an OA? Keep an eye on your email and social media for hiring campaigns, as we recruit for this role at least once a year. It’s a rewarding position that allows you to engage with the campus community and develop valuable skills.

Services Provided by Service Desks

Service desks offer a range of services to make your campus life more convenient. Here are some of the key services you can expect:

1. Check-Out Enhancements: Need sports equipment, hammocks, cleaning supplies, or tools for lofting or delofting your bed? You can check out these items at your service desk.

2. Temporary Replacement Keys: If you get locked out of your room, don’t worry! Service desks provide temporary replacement keys to ensure you can regain access quickly.

3. General Information and Assistance: Whether you have questions about housing policies, need directions, or require help with other issues, the OAs at the service desk are there to assist you.

Making the Most of Your Service Desk

To make the most of the service desk, remember to:

• Introduce yourself to the OAs and get to know them.

• Don’t hesitate to ask questions or seek help when needed.

• Follow any guidelines or procedures set by the service desk to ensure smooth operations.

Service desks are here to support you, so take advantage of the resources and assistance they provide. Always make sure to say hi to your OA and appreciate their efforts to make your Carolina experience the best it can be.

Welcome to the Carolina Housing community, and we hope you find this information helpful throughout your journey here!
