As the fall semester draws to a close, Carolina Housing would like to ensure all residents understand the housing cancellation timeline. Whether you have already been assigned housing or are on the priority waitlist, there are important deadlines to be aware of. We’ve outlined the key details below and included a helpful visual graphic for quick reference.
Housing Cancellation Timeline
For Students with Housing Assignments:
- Until December 15th: Students who have received an assignment through room renewal or room selection may cancel their housing contract for a $500 cancellation fee.
- December 16th through January 16th: Students will be responsible for 50% of their Fall semester room rent if they cancel during this period.
- On or after January 17th: Students who cancel will be charged prorated rent and cancellation charges equal to 50% of the remaining total contract value (both semesters).
For Students on the Priority Waitlist:
- Until January 16th: Students on the waitlist at the end of room selection may cancel their housing contract without penalty.
- Beginning January 17th: Students without an assignment who cancel will only be charged a $500 cancellation fee.
- Once Assigned Off the Waitlist:
- Within 14 days: Cancel for a $500 fee.
- Days 15-30: Students will be responsible for 50% of the Fall semester room rent.
- After 31 days or more: Students will be responsible for prorated rent and cancellation charges equal to 50% of the remaining total contract value (both semesters).
To simplify this information and provide a clear overview of the timeline, we’ve put together a visual graphic you can reference below:

Important Steps for Students Not Returning for the Spring
If you will not be returning to on-campus housing for the Spring semester, it is crucial to follow these checkout steps to avoid charges to your student account:
- Deloft Your Bed:
- Beds should be delofted to the 7th-12th prong (counting from the bottom up) and fully reassembled.
- Note: We’ve created a quick video tutorial demonstrating how to deloft your bed in just a few minutes—please watch this if you need assistance. This step only applies to students not returning after this semester.
- Remove Personal Items and Clean Your Space:
- All personal items and trash should be removed from your room. Do not leave belongings in common areas or within the building.
- Dust and clean all surfaces, including desktops, dresser tops, and shelves.
- Empty and wipe clean all drawers in desks, dressers, and closet shelves.
- Clear Walls and Surfaces:
- Remove all tape, poster putty, and other adhesives from surfaces such as walls and doors. Ensure there are no holes or damages.
- Return Your Room Key:
- Keys must be returned to your Community Service Desk.
- If staff are unavailable, use the Express Checkout Envelope and drop-off box to return your key.
Failure to deloft your bed, appropriately clean your space, and/or return your key may result in charges being assessed to your student account.
