ResNet: Enhancing Campus Life through Tech Support

By: Cierra Tadda

Phill Young, the Director of ResNet, recently sat down with Carolina Housing to share his insight on the role ResNet plays and why it is a valuable resource for students living on campus. Phil and his dedicated team provide top-notch technology support and services for Carolina Housing’s students and staff. ResNet’s mission is to allow students to excel in their academics while staying connected with friends, family, and the world around them.  And of course, it all starts with an internet connection.

Submitting a Help Ticket:

“I think for students, the key is to support them in what they're doing here at Carolina. For example, we want to make sure they have reliable internet and other technology services, both for their academic and personal reasons,” Phil says. The easiest way for a student to receive technology support is to submit a help ticket at help.unc.edu. We provide a variety of ways to get help, through chat, phone or email.

When you put a help request ticket in, a Residential Computing Consultant (RCC) will come to your room to assist with the technology issue you are experiencing. These are students who live on-campus and are well versed in troubleshooting and resolving tech problems. Not only will they work through and fix the issue, but they also provide instruction on how to solve similar problems that may come up in the future.

Common Support Requests:

The most common support requests are Wi-Fi related. These range from onboarding new devices to the network for the first time, Wi-Fi connectivity issues, or connecting gaming consoles and other personal devices. ResNet is here to help with the student’s needs, “We sometimes see virus and malware issues, or complaints that a student’s computer is running slow. Just as a reminder, we help with all your devices, not just things related to your academic support, but also things like your iPhone or Android, if it’s acting up, we're happy to help with that as well.”

Student Employment Opportunities:

Many are unaware that ResNet has around 60 student staff, and there are two different positions for students living on campus. The Gaming Assistant (GA) helps manage the gaming arena during the school year. If you have a passion for gaming and customer service, this is a great role for you. There are also the aforementioned RCC's (Residential Computing Consultants) who live and work in the residence halls. This position provides a great opportunity to develop your customer service, technology and community building skills, through direct interaction assisting students.

Carolina Gaming Arena:

The Carolina Gaming Arena is an on-campus partnership space located in Craige Residence Hall for students to hang-out, game with friends, and use high-end PC gaming equipment from Lenovo. “One of the things that I am very proud of is that we really make it a place for everyone. If you're a hardcore gamer, it's great for you. If you're a newbie, we do things like Newbie Nights to make sure everyone has an opportunity and a chance to come into a safe, fun, and welcoming place campus.” No matter your gaming skill level or prior experience, the Carolina Gaming Arena is made for everyone!

Phil and his team at ResNet are immensely dedicated to supporting the technology needs of campus residents. “What I think is important to highlight about ResNet that sets us apart from other higher education institutions when it comes to tech support is how uncommon it is to have a large team equipped to provide full-service support.  We'll come to your room, work through the issue with you and troubleshoot it, and teach you how to solve the challenges you have with whatever technology device or problem.”

At Carolina Housing, ResNet goes the extra mile to ensure students and staff are set up for success. When it comes to technology, Phil and his team are experts in their field, whether it is Wi-Fi, connectivity issues, or setting up a new device - they are eager to assist! If you’re experiencing tech issues, reach out to the ResNet team and experience their amazing service for yourself.
