Hey Carolina Housing! My name is Haedyn, and I am a Carolina Housing Marketing
Intern! A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to tour Avery Residence Hall during its
renovation process!
I am currently a student living in Teague Residence Hall which has the same original layout as
Avery! I absolutely love living in Teague, so it was so interesting to be able to see the new and
exciting renovations they are doing in Avery which has a similar layout.
Avery was built in 1958 and hasn’t been renovated in over ten years. One of the main
renovations being made is adding an elevator. Previously, this building only had access to the
rooms through stairs. By adding an elevator, they have been able to expand and accommodate so
many more students through the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accommodations.
To ensure they are meeting the ADA accommodations, they have added a tower in the back of
the building adding an elevator shaft. This is such an amazing new addition as not only is it
adding an elevator, but they are creating two new rooms on every floor that meet the ADA
accommodations, with more space in the bedrooms and bathrooms with lower countertops and
more.
In the new additional building space, kitchens are being added on every floor. As someone who
lives in Teague which only has one kitchen, this is certainly a big upgrade. This new area will
also include a new lounge area, creating more spaces to socialize with your friends in the halls.
Another very exciting feature will be the addition of central air conditioning in all of the rooms.
Moving from window units to a central air conditioner is so exciting and each room will be able
to control the exact temperature they want in the room similar to dorms on campus like
Carmichael Residence Hall.
This dorm has a beautiful view overlooking Boshamer Stadium baseball field. As someone who
loves sports, this dorm is very close to all the sports facilities and would be a great place for
people to stay if they are looking for a central location close to all the sporting events.
I am so glad this residence has gotten the renovations it deserves so that more UNC students can
have the ability to enjoy living in Avery Hall. I am so thankful for having the opportunity
through Carolina Housing to explore the renovations being done to Avery. I look forward to
seeing the final product in August of 2025!
