Kylie's Tips and Tricks for Move-In

By Kylie Ferguson

Hi! My name is Kylie, and I am a first-year living in Hinton James. Here are a few of my favorite tips and tricks for living on campus.

Things to bring for on-campus housing:

  • Storage containers/organization!!! You will feel more at home if everything has a place it belongs. This helps you keep track of your items and keeps things less messy for the days you feel stressed and overwhelmed. I use grey bins for my built-in spaces above the closets, and four-drawer stands for all of my snacks and health items.
  • Long chargers and extension cords (three-pronged!) are a must-have too. I recommend any ten-foot phone chargers, or long cables to plug in small lamps and fans.

Advice for move-in day:

  • Meet people on your floor!!! Knock on doors and introduce yourself, you never know who you might click with.
  • Use large tubs or bags to carry smaller items upstairs, and have things grouped together for easy unpacking
  • If your building has an elevator like HoJo, don't expect to use it more than once or twice on move-in days, the line will be very long if you live in one of the larger residence halls.

My favorite spots to hang out once you arrive!

  • I love using the hammock posts outside of Hinton James or Ehringhaus, it’s such a great way to relax with your friends.
  • A close second favorite would be Coker Arboretum, which is across the street from Manly and Grimes Residence Halls. Because it's on North Campus, I hang out there in between classes too.
