Hortense McClinton made history as the first Black faculty member at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, joining the School of Social Work in 1966. Born in Boley, Oklahoma, she pursued her passion for social work and earned a master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania. McClinton’s tenure at Carolina was marked by her dedication to education and social justice, paving the way for future generations of Black scholars and social workers.
Her legacy is honored through McClinton Residence Hall, reflecting her significant contributions to the university and the broader community.
