Hey Carolina Housing! My name is Haedyn, and I am a Carolina Housing Marketing
Intern! A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to tour Avery Residence Hall during its
renovation process!
I am currently a student living in Teague Residence Hall which has the same original layout as
Avery! I absolutely love living in Teague, so it was so interesting to be able to see the new and
exciting renovations they are doing in Avery which has a similar layout.
Avery was built in 1958 and hasn’t been renovated in over ten years. One of the main
renovations being made is adding an elevator. Previously, this building only had access to the
rooms through stairs. By adding an elevator, they have been able to expand and accommodate so
many more students through the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accommodations.
To ensure they are meeting the ADA accommodations, they have added a tower in the back of
the building adding an elevator shaft. This is such an amazing new addition as not only is it
adding an elevator, but they are creating two new rooms on every floor that meet the ADA
accommodations, with more space in the bedrooms and bathrooms with lower countertops and
more.
In the new additional building space, kitchens are being added on every floor. As someone who
lives in Teague which only has one kitchen, this is certainly a big upgrade. This new area will
also include a new lounge area, creating more spaces to socialize with your friends in the halls.
Another very exciting feature will be the addition of central air conditioning in all of the rooms.
Moving from window units to a central air conditioner is so exciting and each room will be able
to control the exact temperature they want in the room similar to dorms on campus like
Carmichael Residence Hall.
This dorm has a beautiful view overlooking Boshamer Stadium baseball field. As someone who
loves sports, this dorm is very close to all the sports facilities and would be a great place for
people to stay if they are looking for a central location close to all the sporting events.
I am so glad this residence has gotten the renovations it deserves so that more UNC students can
have the ability to enjoy living in Avery Hall. I am so thankful for having the opportunity
through Carolina Housing to explore the renovations being done to Avery. I look forward to
seeing the final product in August of 2025!

Starting school at UNC was a big change for me. New people, a new environment, and more importantly a new place to call home. I remember signing up for housing in May before the following school year, and thinking “Wow, I will be living in one of these dorms this time next year.” While it is crazy to think about now, I never imagined the ways I would be impacted by my housing decisions. I have heard so many different stories about people’s experiences with roommates. When I filled out the roommate form, it was reassuring to see that schedules, preferences, and even habits were considered when deciding to go with a random roommate. Carolina Housing had a perfectly curated questionnaire that eased my mind with the decision of having a random roommate.
Now, in June, we were t-minus two months to moving in. I checked my housing portal and saw my fate, “Roommate Information: below if applicable.” I saw the name of the person I would be living with for the next year. I texted her first to get the conversation rolling. We hit it off. I was in town for orientation in July, and she drove over from Raleigh to meet up. We decided to get dinner at Cane’s even though she was vegan... iconic first dinner choice, to say the least. We went to Insomnia afterward and snacked on cookies when we sat on the quad and started to discuss our living habits and preferences. We both loved romantic T.V., like the show “One Day” on Netflix, which was a constant watch in our first semester. After we parted ways that night, I called my mom and was eager to share that we got along so well. Little did I know a great friendship awaited us.
Fast forward to August, and it was finally move in time! Marina and I moved in and began our iconic roommate story. During the first few weeks of classes, we spent every second together. We got dinner together every night and went to maybe a few too many CLE events. A big facet of our friendship was based on the fact that we lived together. In September, Marina mentioned that she would be studying abroad in the Spring through Carolina’s Spring Forward Program. She was going to be heading to Stirling, Scotland. I was heartbroken! We had become friends so quickly and were constantly laughing with one another, and I worried “If we were thousands of miles apart from one another would we still be friends?”
In December when it was time for finals, we were reminiscing on our amazing semester together, and the fact that she would soon be leaving for her Stirling semester. We enjoyed the moment and celebrated our last nights as roommates together. Marina left in mid-January for Scotland but was able to come visit and have a sleepover one last time in our dorm. We went to Cosmic Cantina and Yopo for her send-off. One too many CLE events later. This time a Halloween quad special with face painting! Ft. our RA’s great face painting!
With modern technology, our friendship would become even stronger despite the distance.
WhatsApp has become my favorite app. We send vlogs and pictures to one another every day outlining random things like grocery shopping, schoolwork, or even just an audible list of things we needed to get done. I can safely say we have sent at least a combined 100 videos while she has been abroad. We also decided to start having weekly video calls to keep up with each other and everything we are doing. We usually call every Sunday and can stay on the phone for up to an hour talking about our weeks.
I am so grateful that Marina and I have stayed in touch throughout her semester abroad!
Carolina Housing paved the way for this amazing friendship, and I’ll be forever grateful to the random roommate assigner who made that decision to pair Marina and me. I have a friend for life, and some of the best memories that made moving to a big new school ten times easier.
Shoutout to Random Roommate assignment for this amazing new friendship! Marina and I might just be the living proof that random roommate assignments can work out!
Cheers, Allie 🙂

Attention residents of Joyner and Alexander Residence Halls. Carolina Housing wants to inform you of a planned water outage that will begin on Monday morning, March 10, 2025. Water service is expected to be restored by the late afternoon on Tuesday, March 11, 2025. During this time, there will be no running water in Joyner or Alexander, which means showers, sinks, and toilets will be unavailable.
The laundry facilities in Joyner will also be out of service during the outage. While neighboring residence halls will still have access to cold water and flushing toilets, they will not have hot water.
To help accommodate residents during this time, bottled water will be provided for those living in Joyner and Alexander. If you need bathroom access, you may use the facilities in Connor Hall, as your Housing FlexPass is already programmed for that building. Gym showers will also be available for your use.
Similarly, there is also going to be a planned hot water outage to address necessary repairs. During this time (03/10-03/11), hot water will not be available in any residence halls in the showers or sinks. Cold water will be available, and toilets will continue to function as usual. If you need hot water for showers, you may use gym facilities.
We understand that this may be an inconvenience, and we appreciate your patience and cooperation. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Carolina Housing. Thank you for your understanding as we work to complete this necessary maintenance.

On Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles are going head-to-head in the big game. Whether you are watching sports, commercials, the halftime show or Taylor Swift sightings, here’s some tips on how to have the best watch party possible!
First, you need a way to watch the game! Tubi is streaming the game for free so if you and your friends have a laptop, TV or phone you can stream it through there! You could also stream it on a computer in the library or go to a watch party. The International Student and Scholar Services office here at UNC is having a watch party in the Nelson Mandela Auditorium at FedEx Global Education Center!
Once you have a place to watch the game, you are free to stock up on all your favorite snacks and get ready for a fun night! You and your roommates could make guesses on how long the halftime show will be, what songs will be played and if there are any surprise guests. Even if you aren’t a big sports fan, there will be plenty of awesome commercials to see and vote on your favorites.
With these tips, hopefully you can have a super fun time viewing the big game without breaking the bank!
Hey Tar Heels!
Spring is almost here, bringing warm weather and awakening insects from their winter hibernation. Even though insects are a natural part of life, we can take these simple steps to help minimize their presence in shared spaces like residence halls!
Here are some helpful tips to prevent pests from entering or infesting your living area:
Reduce clutter: A tidy space is less attractive to pests. Remove empty boxes, eliminate piles of clothes, and make sure everything has its own space and can breathe
Take out trash and recycling regularly: Food scraps and sugary drinks are major attractants, so empty your bins when they’re full. If these items are not removed, it prevents natural pest control measures from working because insects continue to have a food source.
Keep your space clean: Regularly dust and vacuum to eliminate crumbs and debris.
By following these steps, we can all contribute to a cleaner, more comfortable living environment for everyone. Thank you for doing your part to keep our residence hall pest-free!
If you have any concerns or notice pest activity, don’t hesitate to submit a fix-my-room request!

On Friday, 01/17, Carolina Housing staff and students gathered in the Great Hall of the Carolina Student Union to interview prospective Resident Advisors for the 2025-26 academic year.
I was lucky enough to get to interview some staff members, Community Directors, current Resident Advisors and prospective Resident Advisors moments before their interviews! I got to see the interview process and hear from all the different members of our campus community!
Carolina Housing actually employs more student staff than any other department here on campus, which we are incredibly proud of. Without these amazing student staff members, we would not be able to accomplish all of the work we do.
This was the interview phase of the application process and there were hundreds of aspiring RAs speaking to staff members and current Resident Advisors about why they would make a great RA!
I had such a great time getting to talk to all of these amazing people and am eager to see what comes next in the application process!
