Location: Morrison, 3rd Floor Basketball SideMission: Students who are members of the Sustainability Living Learning Community seek to understand and appreciate the motivations behind and possibilities of sustainability. Our mission is to help students: explore their own values, assumptions, and awareness regarding sustainable living and to incorporate that exploration towards personal, communal, and external education and outreach initiatives. Brief Overview: Participants of the Sustainability Living Learning Community will explore Sustainability as a social justice issue and develop their own leadership skills within this context. Through weekly discussions, on- and off-campus experiential opportunities, and outreach/education, students who participate in the Sustainability LLC will learn more about their own identity and how that identity relates to the larger global picture. Community Structure: Participation in the Sustainability Living Learning Community is structured into three areas: Educational, Community Involvement & Service, and Social Opportunities. - Educational:
Students attend weekly seminar meetings on topics of sustainable living. Students must attend 3 out of 4 of these seminars each month. Throughout the academic year, students will be asked to blog on several topics to help measure their own growth and learning with regards to their own sustainable living identity. Students are expected to participate in the blog exercise on a regular basis. - Community Involvement & Service: There will be on-campus and off-campus field trips, service projects, and learning opportunities for students connect to and care for both the community and environment. Students are expected to attend 2 of these opportunities each semester.
- Social Opportunities: The Learning Community Coordinator(s) and Resident Assistant(s) provide both formal and informal social opportunities throughout the academic year. These opportunities can range from structured events such as capture the flag and camping, to informal gatherings in the campus or local community.
Leadership and Involvement Opportunities: One or two members from the previous academic year serve as student coordinators for the Sustainability Living Learning Community. In addition to the coordinator position, the community is designed to develop leadership skills around sustainability as an issue of social justice. Therefore, all community members will have the opportunity to take on a leadership role throughout the academic year (planning service events, leading weekly discussion meetings, educating residents within and outside of Morrison, etc.). Admission Criteria: Interested participants should complete an application online through the living learning housing application. Preference is given to first-year students; however, returning students are encouraged to apply. A small number of participants will be selected to return for a second year to serve as leaders for the community. Why you should consider Sustainability living learning community: If you are passionate about sustainability or somewhat familiar with the concepts but don’t know how to apply them or are unfamiliar about sustainability but want to learn more about the topic, this is the right community for you! The Sustainability Living Learning Community at UNC takes participants from all walks of sustainability, brings them together to form individual and group identity and awareness, and encourages education and outreach to help reduce our ecological footprint.
