Welcome

At Carolina, you can live and study on one of the most beautiful campuses in the country, where exciting events and incredible opportunities are always just a short walk away. Our campus is home to 8,300 students - almost half of our undergraduate student body.

We strongly recommend that all students live on campus, particularly through the first two years, because there is simply no better way to experience the unique sense of active engagement, community, and belonging that defines Carolina.

By living on campus, you’ll stay in touch with the heartbeat of Carolina. You’ll be centrally located near classes, libraries, dining halls, campus events, happenings in the Pit, the bustle of Franklin Street, and other “can’t miss” cornerstones of the Carolina experience. You’ll create strong, enduring bonds with people you might not have otherwise met.

You’ll also have your choice of building styles, room arrangements, and communities. Wherever you live, you’ll be supported by a professional staff of resident advisors and community directors to ease your transition to college.

And with campus police and residence hall staff on call 24 hours each day, you’ll breathe easier knowing that your safety is our first priority.

You have the rest of your life to live off campus, so don’t miss this chance to join your classmates and live the Carolina experience!

Within the Division of Student Affairs, the mission of the Department of Housing and Residential Education is to create an inclusive on-campus housing environment that promotes:

  • personal development
  • citizenship
  • involvement
  • leadership

Students will ultimately experience what many call the 'Carolina Moment'; that moment in time when you realize that you make a difference as an individual and reciprocally value connectedness with the larger university community. Students who live on campus are more likely to interact with professors outside of class, attend cultural events, seek employment on campus, and participate in clubs and organizations. By getting involved, students develop an identity with the larger university community, quickly develop social networks, and find opportunities for intellectual, spiritual, physical, and occupational growth.

We invite you to become engaged in connecting with the intellectual climate. We expect you to enrich our communities with leadership, citizenship, civility, and personal responsibility, and we welcome your comments for how we can enhance your living and learning experience at Carolina.

Sincerely,
Larry M. Hicks
