Welcome to a community rich in tradition and academic excellence. The Cobb Community offers a unique residential experience for a diverse population of students of all academic classifications. Whether you enjoy playing the piano in the lobby or playing tennis or basketball on the newly renovated courts right outside, the Cobb Community has something for every student. Built in the 1950s, the Cobb Community opened its doors in 1952 and was named for Collier Cobb, an 1880 graduate of UNC. Collier Cobb later came back to UNC and was a beloved professor in the Department of Geology. In specific, Cobb is a five-story residence hall located on the Northern section of campus, offering close access to Lenoir Dining Hall, most classroom buildings, and Franklin Street. Cobb was recently renovated in 2005 and has a brand new feel of luxury and fun. The Cobb Community is also home to two of Carolina’s Learning Communities— Connected Learning Program and Men@Carolina. The Connected Learning Program is an opportunity for residents in the Cobb Community to develop academically based projects that connect their passionate interests with classroom experiences, campus involvements, and the greater community. Men@Carolina focuses on leadership and men’s issues in an educational environment, providing residents a way to connect academics, leadership development and experience, social life, civic engagement, and fun. Both these Learning Communities offer options for students who want unique, more inclusive residential learning experiences. Cobb residents are encouraged to be outgoing, academically driven, and eager to create a close-knit community on campus. These ideals encompass what it means to be a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill!
